With core hours of 10-12 and 2-4pm.

Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Wednesday: 7:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

  • 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM
  • 10:00 AM - 2.30 PM
  • 8.30 PM - 10:30 PM

Example B:   Monday - Friday:

Compressed Hours:

For example working 4 longer days a week with 1 day not working.

Monday - Thursday: 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Friday: Non working day

Annual Hours:
Duration

You have a set amount of hours you must work per year. However, you have some flexibiilty when you do these. This can include 'core hours' per week - working the rest flexibily or when there's extra demand at work.

Working Week: The core working hours of 20 hours per week.

Working Month: During peak seasons, the employee may work up to 40 hours per week.

Working Year: Over the course of a year, the employee could work a total of 1,800 hours, with busier months during holidays and quieter months with reduced hours.

Part Time:
Duration

Anything less than what the company defines as full time work. Full time for most people is 5 days a week.

Part time can take the form of working fewer hours each day (such as half days thus totalling less than 5 days per week), or working fewer days per week.

Example A: Half days
Monday - Friday:
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Example B: Fewer days per week
Monday - Tuesday
Non working day
Wednesday - Friday Working day

JobShare:
Duration

Where two or more people share the responsibility for the same job, thus each person works part-time.

This is usually an equal split of the role between two people where each works 2.5 days per week. Though it can also be split differently, for example a 3:2 days split or even 4:1.

An equal split example:

Monday - Wednesday lunchtime: Person A working
Wednesday lunchtime - Friday: Person B working

Term time:
Duration

Working regular hours and days during term time, with flexibility during the school holidays.

Working full time Monday to Friday. during term time.

Not working during School holidays over Christmas, Spring and Summer breaks, and also half term breaks.

Flexible Retirement:
Duration

Also know as partial or semi retirement. Where you start winding down from your regular job, either reducing working hours, days or job function.

Example A: Changing job role
Monday - Friday:
Full time job with different or less responsibilities.

Example B: Fewer days per week and hybrid
Monday - Wednesday
Working day in office
Thursday Working from home
Friday Non working day

Hybrid:
Location

A combination of remote and office based working where you spend some of the week working from the office, and the rest of the week working from home or other remote locations.

The most common split is 2 days week in the office and 3 days working from home.

Remote:
Location

Working predominantly at a location which is remote from the employer’s office/workplace.

Monday - Friday : Working from home

1 day a month: Going into the office e.g. for monthly department meetings.

Commissioned Work:
Duration

No fixed hours, you work towards output targets. For example freelance work.

A graphic designer completes a commissioned project to create marketing materials for a client over a 3-month period, working flexibly from home and earning a percentage of the project's total cost upon successful completion.

Career Breaks :
Time

A temporary pause in your career or employment. This could include parental leave, sabbaticals, health breaks, travelling, or care giving breaks.

A project manager takes time out to take care of her elderly mum. This could last a few months or longer.
